According to Ayurveda, Sciatica is usually caused by an increase or aggravation of Vata dosha. Compression of the Sciatica nerve and inflammation of the areas surrounding the Sciatica nerve lead to severe pain in the lower back, numbness in the neck and can cause discomfort in sitting. Inflammation of the supporting tissues of the sciatic nerves of the leg cases the pain running from the lumbar (lower back) region to the back of the legs. Sciatica pain is felt in either one or both of the legs and usual aggravate as the age advances. Sciatica is known as Gridhrasi in Ayurveda, and is considered to be caused due to impaired digestion. A weak digestive system results in the the buildup of toxins (ama) which accumulate in the minute channels of the body.
